A Whale of A Time!

I recently attended Oceanoise 2015 in the City Auditorium of Vilanova I la Geltrú which is a beautiful beach town near Barcelona, Spain.

The growing scientific and societal concern about the effects of underwater sound on marine ecosystems has been recently recognized through the introduction of several international initiatives aiming at measuring the environmental impact of ocean noise at large spatial and temporal scales. At the conference, all aspects of underwater sound were discussed ranging from seismic sources to soundscapes to modelling and impact and mitigation.

There was a discussion about ambient noise versus soundscapes, effects of transients and masking, how to analyse and average data, what is the meaning of sounds to mammals, can mammals feel the difference in sea bed properties, habitat degradation, biological consequences, tolerance versus habituation, the concept of marine acoustic dose, if humans can adapt then can marine mammals

Some very thought provoking sessions and some great people. Looking forward to meeting them again soon!
