Acoustic, Noise and Vibration Services


For over 35 years, Dr Broner has been heavily involved with architectural acoustics and mechanical services noise control. In this capacity, he has been involved with the design and specification of walls/floors/ceilings and roofs for sensitive spaces such as hospitals, offices and prisons to ensure acoustical and speech privacy. For Defence/legal and similar facilities, he has also been involved with ensuring given levels of acoustic secrecy are also achieved.
Norm has also been concerned with the internal spatial design so as to achieve the required reverberation time, speech and music conditions, warmth, definition and clarity for halls, theatres, auditoria, court rooms etc. The effect of air conditioning noise on internal ambient levels has also been investigated and controlled. Norm was involved, through ASHRAE, in the setting of low frequency noise criteria and the development of the RC Noise Mark II metric for air conditioning noise.

Norm has also been involved with minimising noise intrusion from outside noise sources such as traffic, aircraft and munitions noise.

He has also been involved in the measurement post construction of the acoustic performance of various walls/facades to prove that the acoustic requirements have been met and has advised on fixes if they do not comply.
Norm has also been involved with the design, specification and commissioning of sound systems ranging from simple address to large sports venue facilities. In addition, he has predicted structure borne noise levels in critical spaces due to railway activity and considered vibration isolation options.

Dr Broner was also responsible for the introduction of Electronic Reverberation Enhancement systems to the Kwai Tsing Theatre and Singapore Cultural Hall. This involved specification, evaluation of tenders, supervision of installation and commissioning testing for these systems

Acoustic Facility Design for RAAF Williamtown

Client: Defence/Abigroup

Role: Acoustics Design

Key achievements

Provided acoustic design of the facades, SAPF’s, SCIF’s (high security areas) and mechanical services to minimise noise intrusion at the proposed new facility buildings to cater for the introduction of the JSF at the Base.

Noise Insulation Assessment and costing for the Super Hornet at RAAF Amberley


Client: Defence

Role: Acoustic Design

Key achievements

Derived standard acoustic insulation treatments for a number of different housing types around Amberley and applied these to the housing in different noise level contour regions to arrive at a total noise insulation costing for the introduction of the Super Hornet

Singapore Chinese Orchestra

Project value: S$25 million

Provision of architectural acoustics design and mechanical services noise and vibration control for this 1000 seat theatre venue. In addition, to allow greatest flexibility of use for this size hall, specification and commissioning of Electronic Reverberation Enhancement System.

Interspatial noise intrusion design for BCA, control of bass noise from ground floor to adjacent tenancy, control of rooftop noise emission to neighbouring buildings during parties

Hamerkaz Shelanu Synagogue, Melbourne

Role: Acoustics Design

Key achievements

Assisted with architectural design of the synagogue hall including ceiling design and reverberation control. Assessment of mechanical services noise emission to the neighbouring apartments and advice re control. Preparation of report for Council.

Sound System project experience
  • MCG Melbourne – Design of new sound system for Southern Stand.
  • Dreamworld Imax Theatre, Coomera, Queensland – Design of the acoustic characteristics of 442 seat Imax Theatre and the design, specification, commissioning and tuning of a high level six channel sound system compatible with the Imax Projection System of Canada.
  • Hoyts Cinema Centre – Architect: Ron Fitch -Design of a high transmission loss double masonry wall so as to subdivide one large cinema. Floating floor slab design to give 55dB noise reduction at low frequencies. Advice given regarding internal finishes.
  • Omnimax Theatre, Great Barrier Reef Park, Townsville – Acoustics, noise and vibration design and responsibility for final acoustic conditions. Theatre is a dome shape and thus very careful attention to sound focussing and flutter echo control is required. Brief also covered control of mechanical plant noise and supervision of multi-channel high-fidelity sound system.
  • Kwai Tsing and Yuen Long Theatres, Hong Kong – Responsible for the architectural acoustics, the sound system and acoustic treatment for the mechanical services for these 800 seat world class auditoria.
  • Hong Kong Polytechnic and Lingnan College Auditoria, Hong Kong – Responsible for the architectural acoustics, the sound system and acoustic treatment for the mechanical.
  • Shatin Town Hall, Hong Kong – Installation of electronic reverberation enhancement system to improve the acoustics of this 1500 seat Theatre.
  • IMAX Theatre – Indonesian Government through Harapan Kita Foundation, Jakarta – Acoustic design for 794 seat theatre built at the Taman Mini Cultural Park, Jakarta. In addition, full design, specification, supply, commissioning and tuning of an 8-channel high level sound system for the entire complex.
  • Christian Outreach Centre, Brisbane, Queensland – Complete acoustic design of a 16,000 seat religious centre incorporating design and specification for a complex multi-channel and time delay sound system.
  • State Theatre, Melbourne Victoria – In conjunction with the Architects, Roy Grounds & Co., and Acoustic Consultants, Bolt, Beranek & Newman – the development of performance parameters for an acoustically transparent mesh ceiling system.
